Form 1095-A FAQ: What You Need to Know About Your Health Insurance and Taxes

1. What is Form 1095-A?

Form 1095-A is a document you receive if you had health insurance through the Marketplace (Obamacare). It includes:

✅ The months you had coverage

✅ The amount of your monthly premium

✅ Any Advance Premium Tax Credit (APTC) you received to lower your costs

2. Why Do I Need Form 1095-A for My Taxes?

The IRS requires this form to check if you got the correct tax credit for your health insurance. If you received too much, you might have to pay some back. If you received too little, you could get extra money added to your refund.

3. What If I Had Other Health Insurance Besides Obamacare?

Even if you had another health insurance plan, you could still have had a Marketplace (Obamacare) plan at some point during the year. Always check to see if you received Form 1095-A because missing it could delay your tax return.

4. What Do Columns A, B, and C Mean on Form 1095-A?

Your Form 1095-A has three important columns in Part III that affect your tax return:

ColumnWhat It MeansA – Monthly Premium AmountShows how much your insurance plan cost per month.B – Second Lowest Cost Silver Plan (SLCSP)This is a benchmark plan used to calculate how much financial help you qualified for. Even if you didn’t pick this plan, it’s still used to determine your tax credit.C – Advance Premium Tax Credit (APTC) ReceivedThis is the amount the government paid directly to your insurance company to lower your monthly premium.

Why This Matters:

If Column C is higher than expected, you might owe money back.

If Column B is missing or incorrect, it can cause tax filing delays.

5. How Can Form 1095-A Affect My Refund?

🔹 Example 1: You Made Less Than Expected → Refund May Increase

If you estimated your income would be $40,000 but only made $30,000, you may have qualified for more financial help than you originally received. When you file taxes, you might get an extra credit, which could increase your refund or lower what you owe.

🔹 Example 2: You Made More Than Expected → Refund May Decrease or You May Owe

If you estimated your income at $30,000 but actually made $45,000, you may have received too much in tax credits during the year. This means you might have to pay some of it back, which could reduce your refund or even result in a tax bill.
